My scanner at home can not scan large items so I took a picture of it. I wasn't sure if I should smile or not (hey it was a story about pain) so I did a little smile.

Snow Storm Pictures
I took these this morning:
This one is from the front of the house
This one is from the back of the house, note the patio peeking out. It is a good foot from the top of the patio to the grass
This picture is of the frost on the bushes, it's really really cold here

I'm Famous!
The post I wrote last week about the new Celebrex findings was found by a reporter while searching for peoples reaction to the news. They contacted me via email and asked if I minded answering some questions for an article they were doing.
The results are this article:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2004-12-22-celebrex-risk_x.htm
The actually sent someone out to my house to take my picture, but that didn't end up in the article.
So you never know who really is reading what you write and it seems that MSM is paying more attention to what bloggers say then we know.

Snow Storm Update
I'm sitting here with my cup of cocoa getting ready to put in a movie and snuggle up in the blanket. Looking outside the snow is still coming down hard and is expected to continue for another 5 hours or so.
The wind is blowing creating drifts but estimating we already have around 4 inches outside with another 6 inches expected. Yikes!
At least we will get a White Christmas this year because temps through Monday won't exceed 20.
Sure glad I didn't have to get up this morning and go to work, hee hee hee.
Update:
The snow stopped early, yea! The Noon news says the offical total for my area is 7 inches.
I'll take some pictures and post tomorrow.

Grocery Store Rummble
I just got back from the grocery store, I had to pick-up the stuff for my Au Gratin potatos that I am tasked with for Christmas.
I only had 20 items so I decided it would be faster to use the U-Scan lanes, so in I go. I'm scanning my stuff and this lady gets in behind me.
The conversation:
Rude lady: Did you know this is the express land, that means 12 items or less
Me: Umm, no
Rude lady: Well you have more
Me: Umm, I didn't see any signs saying 12 items or less
Rude lady: It's express, that means 12 items or less
Me: *thinking: so your bitching about my couple more items, it's not like I have a basket full*
Me: well excuse me
Rude lady: hrump
Me: *slows down*
Rude lady: hrump
Me: *slows down even more*
Rude lady: hrump
Me: *paying*
Rude lady: hrump *trying to push my basket up*
Me: *taking my damn sweet time paying and getting my basket out*
I mean really, a couple more items in a line that doesn't specifically say 12 or less and this lady becomes scrouge.
So upon leaving I turn to her and gave her that don't screw with me look, smiled and went on my merry way.

1973 Americans Must Drive 55
A federal speed limit of 55mph was imposed across the United States. The new limit was intended to increase safety and fuel economy, and studies show that it succeeded. It also made speed-happy drivers cranky, and led to widespread speeding.
P.S. - Today in a lot of states the speed limit is set at 70mph, like in Michigan. But my theory as alwasy, the speed limit is just a suggestion.

I live within a 4 mile drive of this airport and the landing pattern for the airport is right over our house. It's very easy to actually hear the planes reving up their engines to take off and the engines winding down on landing. (Actually since I have been 11 years old I have lived within 6 miles of the airport, but now I'm just closer)
Willow Run is one of the largest Cargo Air Freight airports in the U.S. They are also a general aviation (Red Wings sometimes land here) and Corporate aviation airport. You can also learn how to fly out of this airport, so everything from Props to International 747 Cargo jets land and take off from there. And also during Michigan Troop movements the big ol' Military Cargo jets take off and land from there (don't ask why because Selfridge Air National Guard Base is an hours ride away).
So anyway what I am getting at is I have been sitting in the house for almost 2 hours now and the planes are constantly taking off and landing, I'm talking every 5 minutes. You know Christmas is close with all those Cargo's coming and going.
As for the Military Cargo's they only take off and land during the night, when there is dead silence out. I'm talking between 1am and 4am only. Try sleeping with a huge Military Cargo plane reving it's engines up and taking off or having one landing with the landing pattern right over your house.
During the summer they have a huge Air Show, and in the past the Blue Angels and even once or twice the Thunderbirds have flown in the show. We could actually sit on our patio and watch the shows. Last year the old fighter Bi-Planes flew over the house and they were so low you could actually see the people in them.
Beyond that Willow Run has a very rich history with WWII. The worlds largest Bomber making factory built by Henry Ford and Lindburg is on the same property. That's right, the B24 "Liberator" was built at Willow Run. Also housed on the grounds is the Yankee Air Museum.

1979 U.S. Government Rescues Chrysler
The U.S. Congress approved $1.5 billion in loans to the financially threatened Chrysler Corporation in an effort to save the battered automotive giant. President Jimmy Carter signed the bill on January 7, 1980. Under the stewardship of Lee Iacocca, Chysler rebounded quickly. By the late 1980s, the automaker was posting record profits.
P.S. - I remember seeing the commericals with Iacocoa in them during this time. He starred in commericals to reassure everyone that they would pay off their debts. Iacocoa talks heavily about this time in his 1st autobiography. It's probably the most interesting chapters of the whole book and he describes in detail the very scary times that they were.

Rubbing It In
Get your mind out of the gutter, especially you Harvey.
I would just like to rub it in that today is my last working day of the year. Yep, at 5pm today I will not have to go back to work until January 3rd.
You see, the advantage to working in the Automotive Industry is that the entire Industry shuts down from Christmas Eve until the day after New Years Day and they pay employees during that time also.
Add a few extra days of vacation that one hadn't taken yet and waa laa, instint 2 weeks of vacation.
So if posting looks wierd or non-existant it's because we have free dial-up at home and it sucks worse then dial-up you pay for.

1892 Inflatable Wheels
Alexander Brown and George Stillman of Syracuse, New York, patented an inflatable automobile tire. Before the pneumatic tire, wheels were often made of solid rubber. This made travel a bumpy experience. After all, the streets of 1892 were made of dirt or cobblestone. Some horse-drawn carriages had been made with inflatable tires, but Brown and Stillman got the first patent for pneumatic automobile tires.

AGH! Not Celebrex Too
Really, could my week get any worse?
Two new studies of Celebrex came out and one of the studies shows a 2.5 increase for a heart attack for patients taking Celebrex, but the study may be flawed since the dosages were 400-600mg which they are saying is 4 times the normal dosage. And the other study at 400mg per day show no increase in heart attack risk.
Well, I am on 200mg twice per day. That is 400mg per day, so now it's back to the doctor to see what he has to say.

Pride
Growing up it was instilled in me that you should take pride in anything you do because it reflects back on you as a person.
My job ethics are grounded in that theory, which probably is part of the reason I am in Quality. I also expect that out of people, pride in what they do. Taking responsibility for the job they do, making sure it gets done right.
If you have ever been in Manufacturing you know that there is a love-hate relationship between Quality and Production.
I feel that most people on the line have a basic responsibility to question things and when things are not right they should be responsible enough to let someone know. Production feels otherwise, so I found out in a meeting yesterday. I am pissed.
So I started looking at things and have come to the conclusion that I have set my expectations way to high. I shouldn't assume that people really care or take pride in what they do. It's a job, just a way to earn money. I feel dis-allusioned, like maybe I take my job to seriously. Maybe I do, maybe I shouldn't worry so much about people not doing things the way they should be.
I'm confused.

World Sales Expected to Spike by 2009
Worldwide auto sales will escalate by 27 percent to 75 million between now and 2009, according to a report from J.D. Power & Associates. A total of 59 million vehicles were sold last year, of which 32.8 percent were in North America; 32.4 percent in Europe; 25.1 percent in Asia; and 3 percent in South America.
Powered by China, Asia will enjoy the largest growth rate over the next five years, representing 6 million to 7 million vehicles in growth a year, says J.D. Power chief forecaster Jeff Schuster. China will help boost Asia to a 31.6 percent piece of the global market. Europe will drop to 30.5 percent and North America to 27.6 percent. Another growing area, however, will be South America, expected to rise to 4.1 percent.
Further, J.D. Power's predictors expect sales of four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles to mushroom from 24 percent of the market currently to 38 percent by 2011. Slow growth for U.S. sales is expected, with this year's 16.7 million rising to 16.9 million next year, 17.1 million in 2006, 17.2 million in 2007 and 17.4 million in 2008. J.D. Power also sees the worldwide capacity utilization rate advancing from 73 percent currently to about 80 percent in 2009. -- Mac Gordon

1949 Swedish Carmaker Debuts
A Swedish company by the name of Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget produced its first motorcar. In 1965, the concern changed its name to Saab Aktiebolag, and a few years later simply to Saab. The first Saab automobiles were engineered with the precision of fighter planes--the company's other main product. Today Saab is known for producing safe, reliable, high-performing vehicles. In 1990, General Motors bought Saab's car operations, excluding its bus, truck, and military jet businesses. Ten years later, GM acquired the rest of Saab's automotive operations.

A Hybrid for Porsche?
You always wanted a Porsche but just wouldn't guy one because you only by Hybrids, well your luck has changed. Yes, Porsche is jumping on the Hybrid bandwagon and going to try out a Porsche Hybrid.
Via The Car Connection:
Fuel economy may seem the last thing on the list the typical Porsche buyer is likely to consider when shopping, but the German automaker is giving serious thought to the idea of adding an eco-friendly hybrid to its lineup.
"If you're a responsible manufacturer, it's something you have to look at," said Peter Schwarzenbauer, CEO of Porsche Cars North America, (PCNA), adding that "at least for the North American market, this may be a direction" the company will take.
A gasoline-electric version of the Cayenne would almost certainly be the approach taken - if Porsche decides to opt in on the increasingly popular technology. And the automaker would likely put as much emphasis on added performance as it would on improved mileage, according to the German executive.
A study team was launched earlier this year, Schwarzenbauer acknowledged, but so far, it has been given no timetable for reporting in, nor is there a target date for production. It is possible, he hinted, that Porsche might not develop the necessary hybrid hardware on its own. "We should be open to talk to everybody into this technology," Schwarzenbauer said, even the new hybrid joint venture teaming General Motors and DaimlerChrysler.
In a separate line of discussion during a pre-holiday dinner, Schwarzenbauer confirmed that a decision on whether to add a fourth model line would be completed by "the summer of 2005." At this point, he suggested, the debate is "30 percent 'if,' and 70 percent 'what.'" Said Schwarzenbauer, "When you're a small manufacturer, like we are, we're forced to grow," though that does not guarantee Porsche will add a new model.
Growth is definitely something happening for Porsche's North American subsidiary - a unit now responsible for 40 percent of global sales. Worldwide, Porsche announced a 15-percent increase in volume during the just-completed fiscal year, while U.S. volume soared 32.4 percent, to 32,767 sports cars and SUVs. The Cayenne has been the big driver for that growth, outperforming even the company's own, optimistic expectations by about 40 percent. For calendar 2004, Schwarzenbauer expects PCNA to hit a "historical record," selling 32,500 vehicles. That would soar pass the previous record of 30,471, set back in the bubble year of 1986. With 13 more dealers aimed at markets not previously covered, Schwarzenbauer said he is optimistic the new record "will last for only another year." -Paul A. Eisenstein

Mustang At Home in the Smithsonian
A Maryland woman has donated her all-original, one-owner, 40-year-old 1965 Mustang to the Smithsonian Institute, the nation's attic, where she spent three decades as a curator before retiring in 1994. The light blue coupe with 193,000 accumulated miles was accepted by the National Museum of American History where it went on display with no more restoration than a wash job, according to the Washington Post last Wednesday.
The American History Museum now owns 72 historical vehicles and the whole Smithsonian, even more. In his account of the museum taking the donation, Post reporter Hank Stuever noted: "The Mustang. You look at this car and think of young men for some reason. White T-shirts. George Bush and the Dekes. You think of tract-house Lotharios who just got their driver's licenses, here to pick up your sister."
"Who hasn't driven a car," Stuever continued, "that, on some sentimental level, we wished to donate to the Museum of Ourselves, and have people listen to our stories about being young, carefree and newly wheeled? It's hard to say goodbye to a car, especially a great car. Sometimes they tow it away before you're ready. Sometimes you get a chance to clean out your pennies and candy wrappers before a salesman gets in it and drives it behind the dealership -- to where, you're never sure. To Mexico? To the chop shop?"
Actually, a light blue Mustang was the feature car of Ford Division's famous
1966 advertising campaign, "Six and the Single Girl," which evidently fitted donor Eleanor McMillan to a T. -- Mike Davis

1909 Brick Racetrack Completed
The famous brick surface of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (the "Brickyard") was finished on this day. The speedway had its grand opening three days later, when the brickwork was ceremoniously completed by Governor Thomas R. Marshall of Indiana, who cemented the last "golden" brick.
It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
It's finally road salt and slow driving season here. Picked up an inch yesterday and were getting more today. We are suppose to get upto a high of 30 degrees later in the week.

1939 Lincoln Continental Is Born
The first production Lincoln Continental was finished on this day (prototypes of the touring car had already been driven). The Lincoln Continentals of the 1940s are commonly considered some of the most beautiful production cars ever made. Today, the Lincoln Continental remains one of the world's most popular luxury cars.
P.S. - Actually the Lincoln Continental was last produced in the 2002 Model Year, which also happens to be the year the car I am driving now was produced.
Detroit's North American International Auto Show
Every January the Detroit North American International Auto Show happens. It is the biggest Auto Show Event in the U.S. (hence the name North American International).
Hubby and I go just about every year and it is a site to see. I enjoy making fun of the poor quality on the cars, especially the Import and Luxury Models.
Since most of you can not attend this famous Auto Show or might not even have one that comes to your area I found a web site that is previewing some of the models that will be at the Detroit and Los Angeles shows (LA being the next biggest).
Go take a look because there are some pretty exciting new cars coming out and also some fabulous concept cars too. You might recognize some of them from my Sneak Peek posts!

1970 Lee Iacocca President Of Ford
Lee Iacocca became president of Ford Motor Company on this day. Iacocca joined Ford as an engineer in the 1940s, but quickly moved into marketing, where he gained influence quickly as a supporter of the Ford Mustang. Iacocca was eventually ousted from Ford on October 15, 1978. He went on to become president of the struggling Chrysler Corporation, which was saddled with an inventory of gas-guzzling road yachts, just as the fuel shortage began. Iacocca made history by talking the government into offering Chrysler $1.5 billion in loans. The bailout worked, with the help of Iacocca's streamlining measures. Chrysler recorded record profits in 1984.
P.S. - I have read both of Lee Iacocca's Biographies and they are great, if you get a chance read the first one. He is a great man and someone I look upto.
NHTSA Adds Center Lap-Belt Rule
Shoulder and lap belts will be mandatory for rear center seats soon, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday. By 2008, the car-safety agency will require all vehicles sold in the U.S. to have the three-point belts, which three-quarters of all new cars already have. However, Reuters reports, only about half of all pickups and sport-utes with rear center seats have three-point belts in the middle position. The new rule is staggered so that 80 percent of vehicles will be required to have three-point, rear-center belts by 2007, and all vehicles by 2008. The NHTSA figures the new rule will save as many as 23 lives each year and might prevent as many as 495 injuries each year.
P.S. - I always wondered why 3 Point Harnesses were not required for the center seat, where an back seat occupant has the higher chance of hitting the windshield than the other backseat occupants.

1963 Studebaker Winds Down
The Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, started during the Civil War, was the world's largest manufacturer of horse-drawn carriages. When automobiles came along, Studebaker converted its business, becoming a well-known automaker. But the brand couldn't keep up with its competitors, despite a 1954 merger with the Packard Motor Car Company. On this day in 1963, the last American-made Studebaker was produced, and the factory in South Bend, Indiana, closed forever. Three years later Studebaker's Canadian factories shut down, and the Studebaker passed into history.
A Blog Brother Returns
Jeff formerly of Hilarity Ensues have fallen off the wagon and is hopped up on the Blogcrack again, this time at Jeff's Nuggets.
He talks about how being a College Student allows you to:
1. Failure to purchase any presents for anyone, due to lack of funds
2. Removal from the holiday exchange lists, due to irresponsibility
3. Suddenly moving back home for an extended period of time while not working
4. Asking for asininely expensive gifts like computer parts, car parts, exotic liquors, etc.
5. "Academic Hangover" - refusal to speak intelligently at home after 2 weeks of final exams
Now, I am a College Student but I am not allowed to claim #1, although I have been #2'ed by the family because they feel I don't have kids so they don't need to buy me anything. I'd rather die than do #3, I always do #4 but never get any and do #5 between semesters.
So head on over to Jeff's new drug house of choice and get hopped up on some of his Blogcrack.
Welcome Back Jeff, we knew you couldn't stay on the wagon for long.

1945 Japanese Auto Industry Starts Up Again
After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 3, 1945, Japan remained under Allied occupation ruled by an occupation government. Its war industries were shut down completely. On this day in 1945, the Toyota Motor Company received permission from the occupation government to start production of buses and trucks--vehicles necessary to keep Japan running. It was the first rumble of the postwar auto industry in Japan.
P.S. - And they have never looked back. As we speak Toyota is getting ready to take over Ford as the 2nd largest Automotive producer in the World.
The Spirit of America remembers Pearl Harbor Day
I have and a lot of other people have talked about Spirit of America. A non-profit group gathering donations to help our Soliders and Marines in Iraq to build a better Iraq, to win the hearts and minds of Iraqis.
You should donate, today of all days. Why today? Because on a quiet Sunday morning, 63 years ago today more than 2,400 Americans, our Fathers, Grandfathers and Uncles were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor. A day that changed America, forever.
As Americans marched off to war, to not only defend our shores but to defend our Allies, people not unlike the Iraqis today were hoping and praying that we, Americans, would help defend the ememies within their country.
Also, head on over to The Cool Blue Blog for more information on how to donate and what the Spirit of America is all about.

1965 A Fleet Of Chevys
Chevrolet produced its 3,000,000th car for the year. It was the first time Chevrolet had produced an annual total surpassing 3,000,000 vehicles.
P.S. - Compare that to todays numbers with all of GM producing 4.3 million vehicles through November. And with all of the car companies producing 15.3 million vehicles through November. This shows the influence and market share that the Foreign car companies have had on the North American market.
(the above numbers are for the North American market only)

Another One of Those Days
Shit + Fan = Someone at the Customer trying to make a name for themself & feel self important.
Bonds + Steroids = A$$hole
I am a huge baseball fan, have been since pre-teen years. It just sickens me what Barry Bonds and others like him have done to the game, they in my opinion are not real ballplayers.
The whole steroid controversy just reinforces my opinion. Barry has been denying any knowledge of using steroids but I don't believe it.
Bonds told the federal grand jury last year that Greg Anderson, his personal trainer, told him the substances he used in 2003 were the nutritional supplement flaxseed oil and a rubbing balm for arthritis
Prosecutors confronted Bonds with documents dating to his record-setting season of 2001 that allegedly detailed his use of many drugs, including human growth hormone, steroids and insulin. He said he believed he only used legal products to treat arthritis and fatigue.
Bonds testified that he didn't think any of the substances worked but kept using they out of loyalty to
Anderson
I mean really, a persons head does not change in size unless they are using steroids, and your body can not change that much without the help of something. Believe me, I have talked with body builders about it and they said no it can not happen without the help of something.
He also said he never consulted with the Giants about what Anderson gave him.
"No way ... we don't trust the ball team," Bonds said. "We don't trust baseball. ... Believe me, it's a business. I don't trust their doctors or nothing."
So now he is pushing the "the man is out to get me" syndrome:
Bonds' attorney, Michael Rains, said the leak of grand jury testimony was an attempt to smear his client. Grand jury transcripts are sealed and the Chronicle did not say who showed them the
documents.
"My view has always been this case has been the U.S. vs. Bonds, and I think the government has moved in certain ways in a concerted effort to indict my client," Rains told the newspaper. "And
I think their failure to indict him has resulted in their attempts to smear him publicly."
I know Barry they are just out to get you because you are the greatest baseball player ever and they are all just jealous, am I close? No? Why then?
I'm black, and I'm keeping my money. And there's not too many rich black people in this world. There's more wealthy Asian people and Caucasian and white. And I ain't giving my money up."
Yep all those caucasians and white people, damn them. I guess Barry doens't know about other black sports players, or Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, all those movie stars, business people, Johhny Cocrine, and Oprah just to name a few.

1979 End of the Line for Pacer
The last Pacer is produced by the American Motor Company. The bubble-topped Pacer was a reasonably popular economy car, though its Jetson-styled body attracted flack from car critics and stand-up comedians alike. More recently, the Pacer gained attention as the mighty roadmobile piloted by Garth of Wayne's World.

1902 Finally, You Can Have a V-8
The first working V-8 engine was patented in France by French engine designer Leon-Marie-Joseph-Clement Levavasseur. The engine block was the first to arrange eight pistons in the V-formation that allowed a crankshaft with only four throws to be turned by eight pistons. Today, V-8 engines are extremely common in automobiles that need powerful motors.

Pencils? Do People Still Use Them?
There is a discussion at several blogs about pencil sharpeners. I didn't know people actually still used pencils, let alone pencil sharpeners. I mean have you people not heard of mechanical pencils? Or better yet that little know invention the pen?
I can not stand using pencils, of any kind. I have to use a pen to write because they don't require constant attention (sharpening) like pencils do. They write smoothly, unlike pencils which can get a chip in the lead and pens can stick with you a long time.
My favorite pen, the Watermen (brown) has been with me for 10 years now. My other favorite, which stays in my planner is a Retro 1951 (pink) and has been with me for 5 years now.

1913 Ford Debuts Assembly Line
The Ford Motor Company introduced the continuous moving assembly line on this day. Ford's new assembly line could produce a complete car every two-and-a-half minutes. The efficiency and speed of Ford's production lines allowed the company to sell cars for less than any competitor.
